Which brand launch MTB carbon spoke wheelset first?
Mar 16, 2026Currently carbon spoke wheelset is more and more popular, not only for road carbon wheelset, but also it gradually expanded to gravel and MTB carbon wheelset. Then you may curious who launch the first MTB carbon spoke wheelset?
First of all, Syncros(High-end component brand under Scott) officially launched the Silverton SL 29er XC mountain bike wheelset in April 2018. This was the first mass-produced mountain bike wheelset with integrated full-carbon spokes, making Syncros the first brand in the industry to launch a commercial mountain bike wheelset with carbon spokes.
The Syncros wheelset features an integrated full-carbon molding design, with the spokes, rim, and hub shell all made of carbon fiber and no metal connectors. It is the first truly "full-carbon spoke wheelset" in the mountain bike sector, positioned as a competition wheelset for XC mountain biking. The entire wheelset weighs only 1,250 grams, with an internal width of 26 mm suitable for 2.25–2.4-inch off-road tires and tubeless compatibility. As the original standard wheelset for high-end Scott models (Scale/Spark series), it took the lead in the commercial application of mountain bike carbon spokes.
Next, Newmen (German brand) developed the first mass-produced mountain bike wheelset with detachable and replaceable carbon spokes. In 2022, Newmen equipped its self-developed Vono A carbon spokes on a mountain bike XC wheelset for actual testing. The wheelset underwent rigorous testing by riders, covering over 5,000 competitive kilometers and 150,000 meters of elevation gain, making Newmen the first brand in the industry to implement detachable carbon spokes on mountain bikes.
Later, in March 2024, the mass-produced Phase 30 Vono A 29er XC wheelset was officially launched. Weighing only 1,160 grams per wheelset with an internal width of 30 mm, it has become a benchmark product for detachable carbon-spoked mountain bike wheels, balancing lightweight design and durability.
And in the same year, 2024, Roval (Specialized's sub-brands) launched the Control SL Team 29er XC wheelset. Featuring a composite spoke construction of carbon fiber and titanium alloy, the complete wheelset weighs only 1190g, offering a 29% weight reduction and a 63% increase in strength compared to steel spokes. It has become a UCI XC World Cup championship-level wheelset, and Roval is also the first brand to implement mountain bike carbon-spoked wheelsets in large-scale UCI XC World Cup competitions.
In 2025, it was upgraded to the Control World Cup version, achieving an astonishing lightweight weight of 998g—even lighter than road bike wheelsets.
Finally, with the popularity of carbon spokes, many Chinese manufacturers have developed their own mountain bike carbon spoke series. Light Bicyce is the first brand in China to research, develop and mass-produce mountain bike carbon spoke wheelsets.
Ornan has recently launched a F/R 24-hole internal integrated ratchet hub for MTB carbon spoke wheelsets (M16), compatible with T-Head spokes and paired with 2.1g carbon spokes. Equipped with the Orn930-22A-XC Flyweight version, the wheelset weighs approximately 1070g.
